Netting (High to Medium Pressure)

The use of bird netting is one of the most popular methods used for preventing urban birds from roosting, perching and nesting on buildings. With correct installation, this system is long lasting and is virtually undetectable from the ground.

The choice of fixing to the building is determined by the composition of the structure being proofed and the size and weight of the net being installed. In general, nets are attached to 2mm diameter 7/7 galvanised or stainless steel wire rope. The ends of the wire are looped and fixed to either a barrel strainer or netbolt. The looped ends are held in place with a crimped ferrule. The wire may then be tensioned using the barrel strainers. The net is attached to the tensioned wire by special circular staples called hogrings, using a hogring stapler.

The type of material used to produce bird netting is made of either knotted Polyethylene or knotless Polypropylene. Both are extremely durable, chemically inert and have been stabilised against UV light. When specifically requested, the knotted polyethylene net can be made fire retardant to British Standard BS 5827 PART2.

Colours

The most popular net colour is black, but can also be produced in white, stone colour or translucent.

Below is a chart of the some of the different types of pest birds and the size of net required for installation.

Bird Type Latin Name Net Size
Sparrow Passer domesticus 19mm
Starling Sturnus vulgaris 28mm
Feral Pigeon Columbia livia 50mm
Seagull Larus spp. 100mm

The size of net installed is extremely important to the success of deterring birds from attempting to land on a structure.
