Project

Tesco, Tilling Road, Cricklewood, London

Client Information

Sovereign Construction Limited is a leading UK based commercial building contractor providing project management and construction services to the retail and commercial sectors.

Established in 1971 they have worked continually with major retail operators, such as Tesco, Specsavers, Abbey/Santander and Pret A Manger, together with many other high street names.

Situation

Our client was instructed to carry out internal and external refurbishment works which formed part of the upgrade project at the Tesco branch in Cricklewood. Within this scope of works re-decorating and cleaning the high level pillar/beam structures at the front and side elevations was high on their priority list.

These pillars and beams are perfect perching, nesting and roosting structures for most pest bird species, which meant the entire canopy area was covered with pigeon netting. As a result this prevented the contractor from gaining access to the metal structures in question.

Our Solution.....

Observations

During our initial site inspection with the client we noticed that the existing netting was damaged in several areas. The netting was also extremely dirty and completely covered in grime. One of the other concerns we had was that the netting was leaving gaps between the net and structure, which in some areas were large enough for small feral pigeons (Columbia Livia) to squeeze through.

Recommendations

We therefore recommended removing the existing netting and then re-instating complete new netting once the painting/cleaning works have been carried out. Due to the location of the works and also the fact that the store was open 24hours, most of our installation was carried out during non-business hours. In order to meet the deadline of the store handover we scheduled the works to be carried out over the weekend as well as evening shifts.

Completion

Safeguard assigned a two man team to complete the works over six shifts. Several types of access equipment were used to ensure the works were carried out in a safe manner, not just for our technicians but also members of the public. We pride ourselves on the quality of our works and in total we installed over 600m2 of black pigeon netting, which has a mesh size of 50mm.
