Project

The Sanctuary Buildings, Great Smith Street, London

Client Information

Collins Construction has been established since 1956 with their core business providing refurbishment and fit out services to owners and occupiers. Not only does Collins Construction undertake projects within the commercial sector but also projects within industry, education, healthcare, leisure and retail sectors.

Situation

The front and side elevations of The Sanctuary Buildings presented a multitude of horizontal ledges that offered ideal perching, roosting and nesting locations for any potential feral pigeon infestation.

Our Solution.....

Observations

At the time of our initial inspection and survey it was explained that pigeon proofing measures had previously been installed to a selected number of the ledges on the front and side elevations.  It was however found during our inspection that these proofing measures had either been damaged or completely removed during the external refurbishment of these elevations, presenting us with a clear canvas for recommendations.

Recommendations

It was recommended that all of the horizontal ledges, from the ground floor level ceiling to the leading edge of the roof, on both the front and side elevations be proofed with spring wire system.  These ledges included all window cills, cornices, string courses, pediments, pilasters and any further ledges that would offer an ideal perching, roosting or nesting area for feral pigeons.

Completion

Working within the presented construction based industry confines the usual courtesy and compromises had to be made, whilst working alongside a variety of trades.  To install the recommended pigeon proofing measures it took approximately 3 months with the end result being a professionally installed spring wire system that is not only subtle, in design, but also practical for the purpose presented.
