These mammals are found on all continents except Antarctica. Scientists consider the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) as the most common and widespread species with approximately 47 sub-species recognised to date.

Indeed, such is their prevalence among countries from Asia to Europe that their traits, including cunning, mischievousness and trickery, have been used as metaphors in ancient mythology and urban legends.

Foxes and Pop Culture

In fact, foxes are even used in many pop culture references including Swiper the Fox from Dora the Explorer, Zorro (β€œfox” in Spanish) for his quickness against villains and Robin Hood being depicted as a fox in the cartoon adaptation.

In real life, however, foxes are often considered either nuisance creatures or all-out pests because of their opportunistic manner; such as taking small livestock, including poultry, and foraging through urban rubbish bins.

Scientists classify several species of foxes as β€œresident urban carnivores”. These animals have excellent skills in adaptation to human environments, so much so that these species can sustain their populations within small urban boundaries.
