Renowned for its world-class cheese matured in the stunning Cheddar Gorge, apple orchards producing some of the finest cider in the world and the legendary Glastonbury festival, Somerset is a county of both new and old traditions that plays home to some half-a million people and attracts many more day and overnight visitors each year.
As with all popular locations, Somerset suffers from its fair share of pest problems. Rats are a particular nuisance, plaguing both commercial businesses and housing association properties around the county. As such, pest control in Somerset is a critical issue and a matter that should be taken very seriously by both business owners and property managers.
Pest Problems in Somerset
Rats are a known problem around Somerset. However, they are not being dealt with effectively in many cases. Reports emerged in October of a Bath resident raising concerns with her local housing association of a rat problem around her home. Yet, despite her complaints, a solution was not found. “My neighbour gave me a call and said he’d seen a rat tail going down a hole outside the front of my house,” the resident told Somerset Live. “He warned me not to touch it in case it had Lyme disease, which could kill me. […] Everybody around this area is disabled in one way or another and they just can’t sort it out.”
This incident is by no means isolated.
Last year, residents in a block of flats in Taunton, raised the issue of a growing rat infestation to their housing association. “We have reported it six times.A neighbour below us has reported it and so has a person on the first floor – literally the whole block of flats is infested with rats,” one resident told the Somerset County Gazette. “My four-year-old daughter is too scared to get out of bed because there are rats around the flat. She is screaming when she goes to bed. She can hear them in the walls and they are starting to wake her up. For a four-year-old to be scared in her own home is not right.”
The growing need for pest control in Somerset is not limited to residential areas. In April, one worker at a popular fast food restaurant near Yeovil claimed that the food outlet was suffering from “a big problem with rats”.
In Bridgwater, a live rat was spotted scurrying around inside a bank. One passer-by even managed to snap a picture of the creature with his smartphone. “It was pretty shocking. It didn’t look real”, he said. “I went up to the window and took some photos straight away. It definitely was a real rat. […] They clearly have an issue they need to address.”
Pest Control for Somerset Businesses
Rats are clearly a major issue for businesses and housing association property managers all around Somerset. They have a responsibility to seek out professional pest control services to ensure their establishments are kept clean, safe and pest-free at all times. This is an urgent matter of public health and safety. Rats are carriers of a number of different bacteria and diseases which are harmful to humans – a particular concern for businesses that store, prepare or serve food.
Strict regulations in the UK – including the Food Standards Act 1999, the Food Safety (General Food Hygiene) Regulations and the EU’s Regulation No. 852/2004 On the Hygiene of Foodstuffs – make it abundantly clear that all businesses that handle food for public consumption are required by law, to actively prevent pest infestations. The action recommended in the legislation is to seek contractual pest control services from a professional provider.
Similarly, housing associations have a duty of care to ensure their properties are free from pests and maintained to a standard that does enable pests to enter and infest. Again, professional pest control contracts should be sought to ensure tenants are healthy and safe and that rats and other pests are kept at bay.
